Kwe Kwe?
For the past year 'Kwe Kwe' has provided fairly paid employment for many people in the town of Kwe Kwe, Zimbabwe. Our small manufacturing set-up produces hand made pet beds, using manual sewing machines, which are then shipped to the UK and sold on the UK market. The profits are then injected back into a range of local community development projects in Zimbabwe.
Why Pet Beds?
Kwe Kwe’s founder Tim Clewer is, like many Brits, a dog lover. Whilst trying to dream up a product that 'Kwe Kwe' could produce with it's limited manufacturing equipment but many keen and talented hands, Tim realised the answer lay sleeping in the corner. Much to the amusement of Kwe Kwe’s new manufacturing team, the solution was pet beds! Once the concept of having a bed for an animal kept as a pet had been grasped by all, the team set about designing and producing the Kwe Kwe signature bed - to be produced in its various colours and sizes.
Fair Trade
Kwe kwe's primary aim is to provide employment and opportunity for everyday Zimbabweans. With the political situation in Zimbabwe continuing to deteriorate and opportunity for employment at a premium the chance to work that many of us in the UK take for granted is being being grasped with both hands. Unemployment rates currently stand at over 75% and food shortages for families outside of the capital Harare is commonplace. Zimbabwe's Much publicised currency crisis is also impacting on everyday peoples ability to trade with one another. By providing access to a European market, Kwe Kwe enables Zimbabweans to earn hard currency. (Euro / U.S Dollars) which is essential to Zimbabwe's development due to the collapse of the Zimbabwean dollar.
